J G dit Lapalme apparently got this nickname when he saved some people from drowning in a river and was awarded a medal. The name of the medal was "La Palme".
He was the descendant of Marie-Madeleine Couc.

correction: Marie-Madeleine should be Marie-Angelique
Jean Gaboriau dit Lapalme was not a descendant of Marie- Madeleine Couc. Jean was married to Marguerite Boileau. She was a descendant of Marie-Madeleine. Marie-Angelique was Marie-Madeleine's sister.
I've heard this story of how Jean got his dit name of LaPalme from a
couple of different descendants. Do you know if this event is documented anywhere?
Also, is this something that happened in France or in Quebec?
